
Julie London (nee Peck) was an American actress and singer whose career spanned over 40 years. London was a torch singer who was known for her soft, smooth vocals. She recorded more than 30 albums of standards and jazz between 1955 and 1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was her rendition of "Cry Me a River" the song she first performed in her debut album. In addition to receiving a musical notice, London was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1974 for her role as nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency!. Born in Santa Rosa, California, to vaudevillian parents, London was discovered while working as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles, and she began her acting career. London's 35-year acting career started on film in 1944 and included roles as the female lead in a variety of westerns. She starred along with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951) and with Robert Taylor and John Cassavetes in Saddle the Wind (1958) along with Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and together with Robert Mitchum in The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-1950s, she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional music career. Her final studio album in 1969 however, she was able to continue to make a name for herself as the female starring role of nurse Dixie McCall in the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) in which she was co-starring alongside Bobby Troup. The show was directed by her former husband Jack Webb.
